Illuminated Arts invites you to an exhibition of photographs, art and sculpture inspired by the traditions and symbolism of African hair and its history. Come and learn about the significance that hair played and continues to play in social groupings, hierarchy, status and bonding in African societies. Come and discover the cultural importance of braiding; hair as a method of spiritual interaction, and hair as a symbol of rebellion, pride and empowerment. Come and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
Illuminated Arts – the team behind the Peckham War Horse Project - has created a joyous celebration of the rich strands of tradition and symbolism at the roots of Black hair. In many African societies, creativity above the temple is a way to communicate with the ancestors. Hair-looms is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Africa, the jewels in her crown.
